Cooma's beautiful natural waterwaysThe creation of the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1949 drew thousands of workers to Cooma setting it on the map. The government pay cheque is extensive with National Parks and Wildlife Service, Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority, State Forest NSW, Department of Defence call centre, and Cooma Correctional Centre, two primary schools and a secondary school to year 12, and a major regional base hospital, adding to those normally expected in a town of this size.

While the emphasis of the local economy has been on Agriculture, there is increasing awareness of the year round opportunities presented by tourism. The surrounding district and nearby Kosciuszko National Park provide year round attractions including snow skiing during the winter months, water sports, fishing and bush walking during the summer months.
